Researchers at the UW School of Medicine, in conjunction with a host of additional studies and reports, indicate that the emocha app is a viable digital approach to increase medication adherence rates. Allowing health care providers to watch patients swallow every dose of prescribed medication–making a process called Directly Observed Therapy scalable–emocha cuts down on costs and increases convenience. “We can accomplish in a two-minute phone call something that might have taken an hour to do and most of that hour was in the car,” said Peggy Cooley, a nurse for the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department in Washington State who has used Skype to talk to her patients with tuberculosis for years.
